My recent work is small; 5 1/2 x 6 inches, painted on raw pine. The grain of the wood determines the orientation of the board and the first layer of imagery. By accumulating layers of sheer color and mark making, the painting surface evolves. Indian Miniatures, Asian Art and Manuscript Illumination provide inspiration. I respond to the luxury and intricacy in these works, as well as the intimacy and strangeness of the viewing experience. Although inspired by tradition, my work also refers to the technology that surrounds us. The transparent layers of color and the tiny dots relate to the detail and ornamentation in miniatures as well as the pixilated image. The imagery is guided in part by color interaction and other formal considerations, but it also reflects my identity and personal history.
